観とは洞察力をいい、見とは物理的に動きを捕らえる目をいいます。両者とも相手の目を見ることが大切とされています。「目は心の鏡」といわれるように目を見ればその人の心の状態がわかります。また、目を見ることによって相手の身体全体が見えるものです。「観の目強く、見の目弱く」という教えもあります。相手を見るのに「目で見るより心で見よ」という意味です。宮本武蔵は「観の目強く、見の目弱し」と言っています。
